Springwell Running Club - Press Release – January 12th
It’s been a weekend that saw Springwell RC members running in contrasting temperatures on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Locally members were out on the trails of An Creagan in the Sperrin Mountains and the rain drenched playing fields of Mallusk, while another member decided that the balmy climate of the Bahamas was a much better option for a run.
An Creagan 5 Mile
The third event of the Sperrin Harriers Winter League Trail Series, the An Creagan 5 Mile, took place on Saturday 11th January in very wet and windy conditions, on a course that, after the downpour of the previous night, was underwater for quite a few sections.
Springwell RC had a very successful day with five members featuring in the age category results. In the M40 – 49 category Alister Jamison was second and Barry Mullan third while in the M50 – 59 category Brian Edgar placed second and Maurice Walker third. Judith Buchanan produced another great run to finish third in the F40 – 49.

Turks & Caicos Islands Move – a - Thon
The Turks and Caicos Islands can be found to the east of Cuba and the North of the Dominican Republic and that’s where this weekends furthest travelled run went for a half marathon. Despite the fact that the race was started at 5am to protect the runners from the worst of the day’s heat, temperatures still reached 26 Celsius as the majority of runners crossed the finish line. Springwell RC’s Conor McStravick finished and impressive 7th in a time of 1.55.49.
Mathieson Cup
Hosted by Mallusk Harriers, the Mathieson Cup took place on Sunday 12th January at the City of Belfast Playing Fields. The heavy overnight rain made for heavy going as the race took place in cold windy conditions. Springwell RC were well represented in the junior races with Adria McAllister finishing 2nd in the Primary Girls race and Matthew Beveridge winning the U17 Boys Race.
In the 6km Veterans Race Gerry O’Doherty produced another great run to finish 2nd with a time of 25:15. In the Open 8km race Ciaran Ferris continued his excellent form to finish 4th in a very competitive race with a time of 27.54.
