Springwell Running Club - Press Release – September 23rd 2019
Making the most of this weekend’s sunshine Springwell RC members were out in force, taking part in trail runs around the University of Ulster and spending two days navigating their way around the Mourne Mountains.
The Mourne Mountain Marathon is a well-established two-day team event which took place this year on the 21st and 22nd September. Competitors have to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint through the mountains, then spending the night under the stars before a second day of running and navigating. As if the navigating and running wasn’t enough, they also have to carry all the kit and supplies that they need for the challenge.
Springwell RC had members in two teams taking part in the C Class covering 35km over the two days, with father and daughter team of Colin and Molly Brennan in the mixed category and Richard Ross and Keith Dalzell in the Male Veteran Category.
Day one saw Colin and Molly complete the course in a time of 4.22.27 to lead their category and place 6th overall in the class with Richard and Keith 2nd in their category and 12th overall in a time of 4.43.01. Their night on the mountains was fortunate to coincide with a spell of settled weather and the second days running saw ‘Team Brennan’ finish 3rd on the day in a time of 3.55.43 to finish 5th overall and win their category with a total time of 8.18.10. Richard and Keith moved up the field to finish 10th on the day with a time of 4.22.59, 9th overall and 2nd in their category with a time of 9,09.27.
