Stanley Reid 5 Mile Classic
Hosted by Sperrin Harriers the 17th Stanley Reid Memorial 5 Mile Classic took place on Friday 3rd August from Loughry Campus in Cookstown. Dedicated to the memory of Stanley Reid, who organised the first 5 Mile classic in 2002, the event attracted over 350 competitors to the start line.
Despite the warm weather the competition was intense with Eoin Hughes and Glenn Donnelly from Acorns AC setting the early pace, closely followed by Eoin Mullan (Omagh Harriers) and Pierce McCullagh and Brian Taggart from Sperrin Harriers as the runners left the campus grounds.
The race order was to stay the same as the runners made their way around the narrow, undulating country roads outside the Campus with Eoin Hughes winning in an impressive 26.55 with team mate Glenn Donnelly second in 27.08. In a closely contested third place in was Eoin Mullan who finished third in 27.32, just ahead of Brian Taggart.
In the ladies race it was a very closely contested race with only seven seconds separating the top three finishers. Leanne Sands (Acorns AC) led for the majority of the race but it was Aisling Murray (Carmen Runners) who took the lead in the final mile to win in 33.30. Leanne was second in 33.34 and Olivia Mullan (Greencastle AC) completed the podium in 33.37.
Springwell were well represented at the race with Bryan Edgar and Hugh Boyle winning their respective age categories and Elizabeth Deighan third in hers.
