Springwell Running Club - Press Release – 12th August 2018
Edwin May Nissan 5 Mile Classic
The 5th annual Edwin May Nissan 5 Mile Classic Road Race took place in Coleraine on Wednesday 8th August, with a record number of participants taking part in this year’s event. Organised by Causeway Coast and Glens Council and Coleraine Leisure Centre, in association with Springwell Running Club, this year’s race saw a record 401 runners on the start line in Railway Road.
Started by the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers, the race made its way along Railway Road and onto Lodge Road with the in-form Eoin Hughes (Acorns AC) once again setting the pace from the start. Having won the Stanley Reid Memorial 5 Mile Classic in Cookstown only the previous Friday, Eoin once again produced a dominant display of front running to lead throughout the race and win in an impressive 26.23. Second place was a battle between Lindsay Gordon (North Belfast Harriers) and Gary Henderson (Armagh AC) with Lindsay establishing a short lead in the latter stages of the race to take second in 26.54 with Gary third in a time of 27.03.
The ladies race saw an impressive return to competitive run for Ciara Toner (Springwell RC) after a short break. Ciara produced an excellent run to finish 14th overall and win the ladies race in a time of 29.09. Gemma McDonald (Ballycastle Runners) continued her good form to finish second in 29.56 and Cathy McCourt (unattached) completed the podium with a time of 31.41 for third place.
Springwell RC was very well represented at the race with almost 70 members taking part, with age category wins for George Brien (M65), Dave Sexton (M55) and Pamela Howe (F50).
