Springwell Running Club - Press Release – August 11th 2019

Despite the monsoon weather conditions the summer road racing season is in full swing with Springwell RC represented at many of the events.  This week saw Springwell RC members in action in Broughshane, Crawfordsburn, Mallusk, The Lurig Challenge at the Festival of the Glens and at the Scottish Athletics Age Group Championships.

Crawfordsburn Trail 5k

Hosted by North Down Athletic Club, the Crawfordsburn Trail 5k took place on Wednesday 5th August in very hot and humid conditions around the Crawfordsburn Country Park.  The men’s race saw Luke Dinsmore produce an impressive performance, winning in a time of 17.06, over 50 seconds ahead of second placed James Budde (North Down AC) who finished in 17.57.  Andrew Tees (Orangegrove AC) completed the podium in 18.15.

The ladies race saw East Down AC juniors dominate the podium with Kirsti Foster first in 19.39, Lucy Foster second in 19.53 and Anna Gardiner third in 19.56.

Broughshane 5 & 10k

Almost 400 runners took part in the annual Broughshane 5 & 10k road race on Monday 5th August.  This popular event was organised by the Broughshane & District Community Association and Ballymena Runners to raise funds for the North West Mountain Rescue Team.

Despite the many torrential downpours during the event produced a top class evening of running with Kieran Scullion (Ballymena Runners) winning the 10k in an impressive 35.10.  Shane Donnelly (unattached) took second in 35.42 and Stephen Nicholson (PACE RC) third with a time of 37.31. The ladies race saw Canadian visitor Jane McCann (unattached) take top honours in 40.48 with Lucy O’Dell second in 43.48 and Louise Jones third in 44.20.

The 5k saw a new course record as Gary Scully (Nenagh AC) ran 17.09 to  top the podium with Robin Claxton (unattached) second in 18.07 and Dwayne McMullan (Glenlough RC) third in 18.08.  The ladies 5k saw Catriona Quigley (unattached) winning in 20.52 just ahead of her mother Geraldine Quigley (Ballymena Runners) who claimed second in 20.59.  Kathleen Law (unattached) finished third in 21.08

Scottish Age Group Championships

The Scottish Age Group Championships took place on the 10th & 11th August in Grangemouth with Springwell RC’s Niamh Carr competing in the ladies U20 1500m on Sunday.  Having already produced some excellent performances this season to claim Ulster and Irish titles Sunday was to be no exception as Niamh ran an impressive 4.34.28 to finish second on this prestigious meeting.

In Other News

The Mallusk Harriers 5 Mile Road Race on Friday 9th August saw Claire Ramsey 162nd 41.26, Pauline Mullan 172nd 42.19 and Andrew Wilmot 232nd 45.36. Thankfully the weather behaved itself long enough for the very popular and very challenging Lurig Run to take place.  This year three Springwell RC ladies took on the challenge with Adele Tomb 141st 48.06, Carolyn Crawford 164th 49.15 and Sarah Dickinson 250th 56.17.

Five Springwell RC members made the trip to Dublin on Sunday 11th August for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon with Debbie Tutty 4786th 2.35.53, Ali Young McAllister 4787th 2.35.54, Zara Hunter 4788th 2.35.55, Rebecca Clarke 4789th 2.35.55 and Aidan Mooney finished 5133rd in 2.51.33.
