For three of Springwell RC’s contingent at the event the day was an important landmark for different reasons.  Aoife Carr, recently graduated from our junior ranks was making a start to her half marathon career, as was Rhona Laverty who took on the challenge of the distance to raise much needed funds for MacMillan Cancer Support, while Kenneth Bacon had announced that the Great Scottish Run was to be the last of his many Half Marathons.

The hillier sections on the first half of the course were made all the more challenging by the stiff headwind, but having survived that and a welcome light shower, runners had the wind at their backs as they headed for home, with one final heavy shower before they crossed the finish line.

East Donegal Half and ¾ Marathon

Sunday 30th September saw over 500 runners gather in Ballybofey for the East Donegal Half and ¾ Marathon.  Starting at Jackson’s hotel the course took competitors on a fast course along the River Finn and then back to Ballybofey on the opposite riverbank.

The early morning start provided perfect running conditions, with the runners facing a light headwind on the way out and a tailwind on the return leg.  For those at the back of the ¾ marathon field the wind increased as the day progressed but thankfully the rain stayed away.

Springwell RC’s Colin Loughery had another excellent run, finishing 4th overall in a time of 1.24.35 to win the M50 age category.  Springwell RC’s only other representative was Will Colvin who finished 67th in 1.44.26.

Springwell RC had 5 members take on the challenge of the ¾ marathon or 20 mile race with Mandy Stewart continuing her recent good form to finish 82nd in 2.44.41.  Kieran Cooke was 94th in a time of 2.46.39 and Pauline Mullan 119th in 2.53.33.  Louise McDonnell finished 142nd with 2.58.03 and, also finishing within 3 hours Mary Brogan was 146th in 2.59.19.
