Springwell Running Club - Press Release – 21th January 2018
Press Release – 21st January 2017
The wintry icy condition prevailing throughout the country resulted in the majority of races planned for the weekend being cancelled with organisers having to consider competitors safety. One of the few events to survive the weather was the Northern Velocity Trail Series 5k Race at Ballykelly Forest on Sunday Morning.
The three lap race of Ballykelly Forest was the third of the Northern Velocity Trail Series and the first in 2018. The cold, persistent rain that lasted the entire race did nothing to dampen spirits with some excellent performances being produced on this challenging course.
Having already won the first race in this series at the Garvagh Forest 10k in November Rhodri Jones (Springwell RC) produced another great performance, leading from start to finish, to win in a time of 18.43. Jason Scott (Springwell RC) claimed his first podium place taking second in 19.11 with Cathal Love (City of Derry) third in 19.31.
In the ladies race, Ciara Toner (Springwell RC) continued her excellent form with her third win in this series. Having already won the Garvagh Forest 10k and the Muff Glen Trail Race Ciara once again dominated the race from the start, winning 20.13. Hannah Shiels (City of Derry) was second in 20.55 with Leanne Sands (Acorns AC) third in 21.49.
